Orange answerphone
The Orange answerphone is a quite sophisticated one: it can handle fax messages, and you can send messages to groups of Orange numbers, or send them at a later time or date. You can set the answerphone not to accept messages at all, but simply play your announcement.
Orange also offer Wildfire, which takes the answerphone concept a stage further. See the Wildfire page for more information.
Wildfire and Answerfax cannot both be enabled at the same time. Both have a one-off connection charge of £11.75.
Gotcha!
Be aware that Orange adds a recorded message at the end of your outgoing message, which consists of a woman inviting callers to "Press 1 for...". This was added without notice, and unfortunately there seems to be no way to avoid it, unless you use the Extended Absence Greeting.
A suitable workaround is to invite callers to press # to leave a message at the end of your outgoing message, then record 30 seconds of silence to prevent the recorded announcement cutting in.
Sending calls to the answerphone
By default, unanswered calls are diverted to the Orange answerphone whether you set this or not. You can have this autodivert disabled, and then you can choose which calls go to your answerphone, simply by diverting them to 123 (or to +447973 100123). The diversion to Answerphone, Answerfax (or Wildfire) is free. If you change this setting a lot, it is worth storing the divert commands in your phonebook for easy recall.
Calling your Orange answerphone
You can reach the Orange answerphone by dialling 123 from any Orange phone, or 07973 100123 from any other phone.
Unless you set a pin, you can only access it from your own Orange number, and not when roaming.
Note that if you have line2 enabled, you have two separate answerphones: you access the one for the line that is active when you dial 123.
If you are calling from another Orange (not your own), press * at the greeting to be able to choose which Orange answerphone you want to access.

Answerfax preferred number
This is the number of the fax machine that you use most often to receive your fax messages. You can easily send answerfax messages to your "preferred number". You can change the preferred number at any time.
